Festivals – a society diversified in caste and in culture

Nepali society is diversified in caste and in culture. Every caste celebrates its festivals in its own way. As Hinduism and Buddhism are the pre-dominant religions the festivals celebrated here are very similar to that of other places.

JANUARY
New year
This event is celebrated by all the people. They spend all the night dancing, singing, drinking and making bone-fire.

Maghe Sankrati
This festival is celebrated on the first day of Nepali Month Magh to worship the God Vishnu. They celebrate this festival by eating Tarool.

FEBRUARYS
Saraswati Puja
During this puja Goddess Saraswati is worshiped. The Goddess Saraswati is regarded as the Goddess of Knowledge. Students join with teachers for puja in their school. The very next day they take the idol singing and dancing to immerse in the nearest river.

Losar
This is the most important festival for the Tibetan people. Losar is the Tibetan New Year. They celebrate this eve by dancing, singing and food for about a week.

MARCH:
Holi
This festival is also known as the festival of colors. They color each other wishing good fortune, good friendship and good wish. Hindu specially celebrates this festival. The festival is associated with the victory of goodness against devilish.

Ram Nawami
Also known as Chaitra Dashian in Nepali. This is the celebration of birth anniversary of Lord Rama. During this the business people start their new business account.

APRIL
Buddha Jayanti
This is the celebration of birth anniversary of Lord Buddha. People take out the procession from monasteries with Lamas carrying their holy books and the Idol of Lord Buddha.

JUNE
Ashar ko Pandra
Ashar ko Pandra is a special day for Nepalese to eat curd and chewra (beaten rice). They believe that goddess Parbati had given Lord Shiva curd and chewra on this day. Ashar ko Pandra is the 15th day of Nepali month Asar

August
Raksha Bandhan
This festival is celebrated by Hindu. During this the sister tie a thread in her brother hand and the brother in turn promise for his protection.

Naag Panchami
This festival is celebrated in the mid of the August. Priests go from door to door with special prayer and paste the picture of snakes protecting Lord Vishnu, as protection of Naag for that house.

September
Janama Asthmi
This is the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. People take out procession caring idol of Lord Krishna.

October
Durga Puja
This puja is observed during the end of this month. Some celebrate this puja in Temple while other make big Pandals.

Dashain
This is the biggest festival celebrated by Hindu Nepali. Dashain is celebrated for 10 days. Each day have its own customs. In the 10th day, people visit their relative and receive blessing from the elder person of the family.

November
Deepawali
Deepawali is also known as the festival of light. This festival is celebrated by Hindu. During this festival people worship the goddess Laxmi and lit out the ‘Deewo’ or ‘Diya’ all over their house.
