The name Sandakphu means the ‘Height of the Poison Plant’, a direct reference to the profusion of the poisonous aconite plants that grow near the peak. The loftiest peak of the Singalila Range, it is the culminating point of many trekking routes in the Darjeeling-Sikkim region.

Sandakphu is a wonderland for the trekkers. It’s located at an altitude of 11,929ft (i.e. 3,636 meters) in Darjeeling district and on the north west of Darjeeling hill town.

From Sandakphu, the best view of the mountain Kangchenjunga is possible, which is known as the Sleeping Buddha or the Sleeping Shiva.

Climate
The temperature swings from -20 °C (including wind chill factor) in winter to +15 °C in summer. Sandakphu gets snowfall in late December to early February.

How to reach trekking at sandakphu
Sandakphu can be reached via trekking. The trek route begins from Maneybhanjang and passes Chitirey, Meghma, Tonglu, Tumling, Gairibas, Kala Pokhri and Bekhey. There are direct cab services from Bagdogra, which will drop you at Maneybhanjang.
